Excerpt
Excerpt: Sung at the Completion of the Concord Monument, April 19, 1836 // BY the rude bridge that arched the flood, // Their flag to April's breeze unfurled, // Here once the embattled farmers stood // And fired the shot heard round the world. // The foe long since in silence slept; // Alike the conqueror silent sleeps; // And Time the ruined bridge has swept // Down the dark stream that seaward creeps. // On this green bank, by this soft stream, // We set today a votive stone; // That memory may their deed redeem, // When, like our sires, our sons are gone. // Spirit, that made those heroes dare // To die, and leave their children free, // Bid Time and Nature gently spare // The shaft we raise to them and thee. // Ralph Waldo Emerson // Brahma // IF the red slayer think he slays, // Or if the slain think he is slain, // They know not well the subtle ways // I keep, and pass, and turn again. // Far or forgot to me is near; // Shadow and sunlight are the same; // The vanished gods to me appear; // And one to me are shame and fame. // They recon ill who leave me out; // When me they fly, I am the wings; // I am the doubter and the doubt, // I am the hymn the Brahmin sings. // The strong gods pine for my abode, // And pine in vain the sacred Seven; // But thou, meek lover of the good! // Find me, and turn thy back on heaven. // Ralph Waldo Emerson...
